Umbria – Road Trip

Dear Readers,

Thanks again to those of you who responded to my second Haber Report from Umbria; much appreciated.

I know I said we would go to Gubbio today, but I moved it to tomorrow. We spent a lot of time driving around the countryside today; much less exhausting! The word of the day is “ceramics”.

We started our day by driving to Torgiano. After walking through the little town for a bit, we arrived at the Wine Museum. It has a large collection of ancient vessels, presses, documents and tools that tell the story of viticulture in Umbria (& beyond). My oenophile companion loved it!

Here are some ancient wine jugs.

And here are some wine presses.

This scale was used to weigh the grapes.

Here is Marty in front of a fountain in Torgiano.

From here we drove to Deruta which has been known for its ceramics since the 16th century. There is a magnificent collection in the Regional Museum of Ceramics. Here are a few examples:

This is for eggs & salt.

Deruta has more than 70 ceramics workshops and boutiques. Here’s a little piece I bought. Now I just have to find some wall space!

In Deruta’s historic center there is a panoramic garden furnished with majolica tables and benches.

While in Deruta, I learned about 2 other towns nearby with the remains of old castles. So off we went. The first one is in Castelleone and the second one is in Catalina.

We had dinner at Al Tartufo which means truffle. Every dish on their menu is made with black truffles and then they add shaved truffles on top as well. Everything was delicious.

Notice my lovely necklace; my Mother’s Day present from Doug and Fawn.

As promised, tomorrow we will visit Gubbio.

Keep those comments coming.

❤️

Irene
