Dear Readers,
No, there is no snow on Canouan Island; I’m just checking that you are all
paying attention! So I guess we can all agree that I picked the right week
to spend in the Caribbean and not in NY. I hope all of you have been able
to dig out by now. Doug: how’s that new snow blower working??
Marc just wrote to tell me how his daughter who wasn’t brought up in NYC but
now lives there (& is “working” for Marty this week and whenever he’s not in
the office) has totally become a New Yorker and a “little bit” of snow did
not deter her from getting to Marty’s office yesterday. Conversely, my son
who, obviously, was brought up in NYC is adjusting to life in the suburbs
and the need to clear a driveway etc. Funny how that works out sometimes.
So I’ve had several complaints that The Haber Report hasn’t appeared in
several days. Well, it’s like this: I’m so laid back from all this lack of
activity that I didn’t get around to writing or there’s not much to write
about or the WIFI signal in the room wasn’t coming in and whenever we did
have a signal, you know who had first dibs because, of course, he has
business to attend to while I’m just a free loader now. Hmm, maybe I should
charge for subscriptions to The Haber Report; I now seem to have not one but
two additional writers; Marc decided to add to Ron’s Chili’s report. The
Haber Report does try for a more upscale audience though!
All right, here’s what you’ve been waiting for. The topic of today’s Report
shall be: what makes a good resort and why I recommend this one (Raffles on
Canouan Island).
1. Upon arrival we were given a list of newspapers and asked which one we
would like delivered to our villa each morning. The NY Times was not on the
list but that didn’t deter Marty and yes, every morning (except Sunday when
we got the Daily News (?); guess The Times was just too big) we have
received the entire National Edition. Muh: you can ditch the papers you’re
saving for me; just keep Sunday and tomorrow (Wed) because we’re leaving
really early.
2. Not only did they leave us robes and slippers in the room, but sandals
for the beach/pool as well; just a nice touch.
3. In addition, along with turn down service every night we get cold
bottles of water. And since I know several of you are always walking around
with bottles of water (even bringing them along when you sleep in The Haber
Hotel), I assume this would appeal to you. Personally I have a thing about
taking my pills in the morning with COLD water, so I promptly put my bottle
in the mini bar for the morning.
4. The staff greets us by name-when we come in for breakfast, lunch or
dinner (and we all know, Marty doesn’t miss a meal) or when we go to park
our golf cart by the pool or by a restaurant. It’s kinda silly but I like
it.
5. The nice spacing between chaise lounges at the pool (and beach). There
are groups of 2’s and 4’s and huge spaces between. It’s very private. It’s
never been busy. I continue to have the pool and the floats to myself.
6. The food at each restaurant on the premises has been quite good.
Tonight we go back to the “fancy” restaurant.
So that’s it from Paradise. The Haber Report appreciates all the comments
(groupwise and individually). I’ve eliminated some who do not respond; I
know some of you have told me in the past that you like to read but not
respond; I like to be responded to!! The next Haber Report will emanate
from 2 cities. Since I am now a free agent (or will be in another 2 weeks;
oh so hard to believe), I will be accompanying Mr. Haber to a conference at
the Breakers in West Palm Beach in May (where we will have the opportunity
to extend our stay for a day and visit with the Gordons). From there we
will be traveling on to Chicago where the busy Mr. Haber has a hearing and I
will investigate what Chicago has to offer (& of course report on it). I
haven’t been to Chicago in years so am looking forward to seeing the new
Millennium Park and all the museums etc.
So for those of you who celebrate Valentine’s Day, I wish you an enjoyable
day and for those of you who don’t, I wish you love in the future. Marty
being Marty, I received a beautiful pair of little gold hoop earrings with
diamonds and the flowers arrived in the room on day 1 of our trip so I could
enjoy them all week. What a guy. He apologized that there was no place on
this entire Island to get chocolate; I told you it was small. Not to be
outdone, I did come prepared with a present as well-a box for his cuff
links; yeah, he does need to get dressed appropriately for all those
hearings!
Joyce has suggested that I write a weekly “column” on what to do in NY when
one retires. I’m considering it! I’m sure none of you will be surprised to
learn that I’m already signed up for a bunch of lectures (varying from
topics as diverse as Jews in today’s Germany to the history of classical
music to the architecture of the Chrysler Building), several walking tours
of art galleries (in Soho and Chelsea) and my first Wednesday matinee.
Perhaps if I write this column and you all see what a good time I’m having,
I’ll be able to convince some of you to retire so I’ll have some friends to
play with.
All my love,
Your Fun Provider and Reporter,
Irene
